Uganda is one of the poorest countries in the world. However, the country is proof that empowering people with knowledge can reduce malnutrition and disease. For example, in the last 15 years, the incidence of HIV has been cut from 30% to 6% of the population. Behavioural change is the only mechanism for preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, malaria and tuberculosis.

A 19 year conflict in five northern districts has displaced about 1.8 million people, creating a humanitarian crisis comparable to neighbouring Sudan. Many people have left rural areas looking for a better life in the capital Kampala but end up in slums, which lack basic facilities and aggravate poverty, disease and crime.

Project: "Youth's behavior change, Nairobi slums, Kenya"
Partner: IMANI Centre
Donation: 1000 pounds

The capital of Kenya is habitated by millions of the poor who live under undignified conditions in vast slum areas where violence, prostitution, desperation and envy spread. Thanks to a private donor's contribution GlobeUp supported a project in slums of Nairobi run by its local partner Imani. The total amount of 1000 pounds was delivered by GlobeUp chairman Antonio Corbi during his business trip to Nairobi in May 2007. Imani operates few centers in various slums of Nairobi where courses in vocational training, primary education as well as mother care services are being provided. GlobeUp project is to support behavioral change of youth living in slums from September 2007. It is very well-timed as just in June the drastic clashes of slum gangs were first time reported. They ended up with police intervention, dozens of dead and thousands of displaced. Slums with undignified living conditions seem to be a soil for terrorists and crime.
